The Depressed Person by DFW ec*

WoW!! How depressing, The Depressed Person by DFW was amazing I loved the story I was so into the story. So much detail and emotions in someways I guess, especially in the footnotes. I also felt kind of bad for the person going through this.

Okay… As the title says the story was about a depressed person. It had to do with a woman who had to deal with her parents divorce something that sounds very traumatic by the way the story explains it. Not only did she have to deal with her own problems but it seems as if she had to deal with everyone elses problems too and everyone around her had to deal with her problems which seems kind of annoying . I guess it is kind of sad when your parents divorce and your not close to your friends who are depressed like you, but it can’t be that bad. I think she needed to move on in life and not look back, look forward. Man this woman needed hella help.

Footnotes:

The footnotes were like a different story they were really long! jk! Okay, so they add a bit more detailson this crazy woman and her troubles. It also tells us some history and deatil about her theraphist I kind of felt bad for her theraphist I would have given up! They gave more detail and emotions to the story.

By the way it took me like the whole day to find this. Like what Patrick said, I felt like a stalker going through blogs just to find the extra credit! haha wow

If you could write like anyone, who would it be? Which aspects of your writing would you have to control?

Hmmm…. If I could write like anyone I would probably chose Mark Haddon. His writing style is easy to understand and is full of imagery. He doesn’t use words that are big and confusing that make the story lose its meaning, instead he uses words that are easy to understand and go along with the story. He does a good job showing of his imagery something I have to do more in my writing. He is also very good at writing his stories from the characters point of view, something I would like to try in my own writing1.

I would probably have to control putting more imagery and putting more metaphors into my writing so that the reader could easily understand without having to reread many times and understand my writing.

Why do we do style exercises?

Style exercises, why do we do them? Hmm… let’s see. They are very helpful to us the writer, we are able to learn so much from doing simple exercises. They help us understand and check out the different styles that authors use in their writing. We are able to learn which styles to use in different occasions for example in formal writing, humorous writing, concrete writing and so on. After all they help us become a better more creative writer.

The Emperor's New Clothes in Another subjectivity style

Here living with me, I had one of those jerky emperor’s. You know the ones that only care about how they look, thank God there aren’t many of them today. I don’t know what I would do! This particular one, a 30 year old jerk, irritated me particularly because he would just care about his clothes and how they looked on him. This time he was wearing some invisible clothes something a moron would probably wear. I mean he wasn’t wearing anything, like if her were cool. Dirty Beast! He disgusted me! There were a lot of people at the time of the procession, I took advantage of the crowd hating on him and made a child yell, “He is not even wearing anything!”In the end he felt embarrassed since he had been played by peasants smarter than him. Just to annoy him when we got back from the procession I told him he looked stupid and that being emperor wasn’t his post.

If you could write a paper on anything, what would it be?

HMMM… If I could write about anything what would it be…..? I am very interested and enjoyed with sports. I am guessing that I would probably write a research paper on basketball or soccer. I think I would enjoy writing and I would be able to write easier and with more passion.

What would you like to study in college? If you would have to pick a major today, what would you pick? What kinds of things do you imagine you’d write in your chosen field?

In college I would like to study dentistry. Inside the area of dentistry I would probably major in orthodontics, which is something I would study if I had to pick today. Somehow I am very interested in what dentists do and looking it peoples mouth (even though it’s very disgusting). It calls my attention somehow. I am guessing and from hearing what other people say, dentistry requires a lot of research and writing. I really don’t know what they could write so much about but I am guessing it has to do with teeth and how the mouth works. That’s that only thing that would suck about majoring in orthodontics!

Dear Grumpy aka my watcher,

You like to have too much fun sometimes and you always stop me from doing a lot of things especially create good pieces of writing. You always distract me and I have to stay up late trying to finish my work the day before, I don’t think its fair at all. Why are you always telling me I am hungry when I am really not? You really need to stop with all your distractions. You should watch out because one day I am going to overcome your distractions and produce good pieces of writing.

My Fourth of July =}

On fourth of July I satyed home chilled and relaxed all day watching TV and thinking about what to write for my essay. This year I didn’t even go out to go see the fireworks on the bay. I was very lazy, since on July 3rd I was partying all day. I went to my nephews 1st birthday party. The party was amazing and got home at 1 midnight. I guess the best thing was the food and getting to see all my cousins. I enjoyed by fun and lazy weekend.

Group Think (the wolf pack!!!)

After the long discussion we had in class and now that we’ve talked to to our groups…. we the wolfs…. think that the question that Gladwell is trying to answer is “Do people that work in big groups have more success in innovation and does the method of challenging each other and feeding off each other help toward their goal?”

Gladwell uses the Lunar society as an example. They gathered together on every full moon to eat and discuss new ideas. They challenged each other in what they wanted to do, if one of them did something then the others had to do something better to top that and challenge. By doing so they created competitive atmosphere. By feeding off and challenging each other they were able to become more successful in innovation. Because of the new innovative ideas they to create a new revolution that bettered society.

Gladwell organized his essay in three different parts. He first introduced the S.N.L cast and what they were about, then he gave examples and history of other groups similar to S.N.L, and lastly he explained how being in a tight knit group was like an inside joke because the more you didn’t get it the more you wanted to be in on the joke. This lead to revolution because more and more people started to link on to this innovative group.

These ways helped Gladwell answer his question The first part helped Gladwell introduce his ideas because it was an example of what he was trying to prove. The second part helped him build on what he was talking about by giving us examples of the past that were similar to and connected to today. The last part gave us a new idea that was related to the topic and gave us something new to think about.

Saturday Night Live > = < German Philosophy

Group Think, a confusing essay to read about. There are so many questions this essay can answer. Obviously like the one on the cover “What does “Saturday Night Live” have in common with German Philosophy?” Yet there are other questions like “Does it take a group of people to come up with something? Does German philosophy have an impact on Saturday Night Live? Or “Does one big event lead to another?” you can keep going.

One thing that Gladwell states really well is that innovation is found in groups. Hmm…… That can be really true because there are times when we can accomplish much more when we are with a group of people then when you’re by yourself. For example in sports or in a class experiment. It is always good to have a group of people come up with something.

When it comes to Gladwell writing his essay I think it’s a bit confusing but I think he does a really good job organizing his essay. I think he truly answers his question. I liked how he compares both things since he gives a little about both and how one thing can lead to another

George Orwell

George Orwell being the writer he is changes his style and tone for Shooting an Elephant completely.

Orwell writes his essay as a story. It seems as if he is not trying to prove a thesis, but tells us about his own experience. He writes in the 1^st person which makes us the readers relate to what he is telling us. It feels as if he is telling the reader the story and having a conversation with us. This essay has much more description. He is very descriptive when he tells us about how he killed the elephant. At some points his description about the elephant would make me feel uncomfortable. For example when he said, “The thick blood welled out of him like red velvet, but he still did not die”. His good descriptions make me imagine the story in my head. Also all his hyphens and parentheses show his relationship with us. It is as if he is giving us a clear idea of what he is talking about.

The tone of the essay seems as if it is full of agony. Orwell seems in doubt most of the time. He feels the hatred that the people have towards him, so he is forced to kill the elephant, something he does not want to do, so he can be accepted and like by all people.

Is Google making us STUPID????

There is a big difference when it comes to surfing the internet and reading directly out of a book. In my personal experiences when I surf the internet I won’t read complete articles, I just skim through them and look for another article on the related topic. On the other hand when I read directly out of a book I read word for word until I finish. I don’t really think that Google is making us stupid because it gives us information from different sources which I think makes us smarter. What I think Google is doing to us is making us lazy. Google is just feeding us information without working hard for it. On the other hand if we didn’t have Google we would probably get the same information, but it would require more work and time.

Reading Habits

In order for me to read something it has to be sports related or an interesting fun novel to read. I can’t read anything that has to do with history or politics. I prefer sports novels since they keep me reading and interested. I usually keep reading until I am tired or I am bored, but usually read from thirty minutes to an hour. In order for me to read it has to be quiet, but I usually read while I listen to my ipod, that way I will be more concentrated.
